[00:23:51] Speaker A: Good morning to you, Jay.
[00:23:53] Speaker B: Well, quite the cliffhanger with this election. Congratulations on the win, but the road ahead would be challenging. Premier thanks.
[00:24:01] Speaker A: Yeah, we're, we're sure glad to have Gary Bake cross the line there and set us forward on a majority. I think you're right, though. I think that British Columbia sent us a message. They want us to do a better job of delivering on their core priorities. And I'm very grateful that they gave us the opportunity to be able to do that. And so that's what we're going to be focused on.
We're having a caucus meeting today, our new team all coming together, and we'll be talking through how we're going to deliver for British Columbians over the next four years.
[00:24:32] Speaker B: So what's going to be the next order of business? I guess the first thing would be to elect a new speaker. But do you have to wait until the judicial recount is over before that step can be taken?
[00:24:45] Speaker A: Yeah, we're in the hands of Elections BC to finally certify the election results, and it's before we can do a squaring of cabinet. That's the one piece of work that needs to be done. The other piece is we do need to ensure that the legislature, as a building and as a, as a key institution, is working properly. And that means having a speaker in place. Rajan continues as speaker for now, and he's done an amazing job and he may continue or may not. We'll see about about all of that. But that piece also needs to be done.
[00:25:16] Speaker B: So you've reached out to the Green Party and you've also reached out, as you said yesterday, to some of the members in the B.C. conservative Party. What sort of a response are you getting? Because yesterday it did sound like as if Mr. Rustad, the Conservative Party leader, said, he said a bit of a conciliatory tone, that he would be willing to work with your government if you are willing to implement some of the priorities that the BC Conservatives are highlighting. So there does seem some room of maybe somewhat of a collaboration.
[00:25:48] Speaker A: Well, we've been clear that we want the legislature to work for British Columbians on the Priorities they sent us to work on. That's everything from affordability, keeping costs low for people, delivering on the commitments we made around an income, income tax cut, affordable housing, also around issues of public safety and security. I know the extortion issue has been a big one in Surrey. Other issues in other parts of the province around healthcare, making sure that people have access to the healthcare they need. And so MLAs who want to work with us on that, we're keen to work with them. But I have to tell you, accepting a speaker put forward by John Rosstad, you know this is a man who sent us Brent Chapman as a candidate, a hateful man promoting hate and racism in our province, we have a very bright line around that and it's a non starter for us. We need as a province, we need to work together to be successful. We need to fight hate and racism every day.
There are definitely restrictions on our willingness to work with the Conservative Party.
[00:26:45] Speaker B: Premier, out of the 10 seats in Surrey, your party won four. And the fourth one being the one that Mr. Gary Begg flipped after the absentee and the mail in ballot recount.
It's been a pretty tightly fought, hard fought race. Why do you think specifically in Surrey you had such a difficult time convincing the voters to elect more NDP members. You lost a cabinet minister from here in the election. A couple did not run. So a lot of losses in Surrey and Surrey probably cost you the comfortable majority that you could have had. What do you think went wrong here?
[00:27:24] Speaker A: Well, I think that for Surrey and for people who live in Surrey, they're on the front lines of the biggest challenges that our province faces. It's such a fast growing community, so many people are moving to Surrey and it's putting huge strain on health care, on schools, on transit, on all the essential infrastructure. And at the same time, people are also facing those kinds of cost increases that people are seeing across North America right now due to global inflation and high interest rates. And so the people Surrey are looking for answers. There were just a few hundred votes that separated us from the Conservatives in both directions across Surrey. And it's clear to me that our MLAs who are there as well as our party and myself, we need to be more engaged with the people of Surrey on the front lines, meeting with people in Surrey and responding to their concerns more aggressively. And that's what we're going to do.
[00:28:14] Speaker B: Premier, your election platform had a projection of 3.1% economic growth, if I'm not mistaken. And that as it is was a fairly optimistic projection. But now, the federal government has recently announced cuts to the immigration numbers for the coming years. That's bound to have an impact on the, on the GDP and the economic growth. So there could be challenges from that side as well.
What do you anticipate and how do you envision that your government would be able to navigate the economic challenges that the reduction in immigration levels is going to present?
[00:28:52] Speaker A: Well, I think that the critical piece for our economy is that we're delivering for British Columbians job jobs that pay them decent wages, opportunities to build a better life for themselves. And across the province there are very significant economic opportunities for British Columbia. We have, there's 14 mines that have been proposed for the province that are in various stages of approval.
We have huge opportunities around manufacturing, food processing, life sciences, and we're delivering on them. You know, our province had the fastest GDP growth of any of the big provinces since we were elected post pandemic and in the last complete year. And so we've got to keep up that pace and we've got to expand it until British Columbians feel it in their daily lives. Our work isn't done. And we're going to make sure the British Columbians are feeling that.
[00:29:42] Speaker B: Premier, among the dozens of other issues that, you know, people expect you to work on, One of the things that I do want to highlight is something that our listeners have highlighted over the last couple of months. And this is about the gig worker legislation that came into effect in the first week of September before the election. And that legislation is not having the intended impact that it was supposedly designed to have. And a lot of our listeners who drive for ride hailing companies are saying that those companies are not following the rules set out in the new legislation. So that is probably also something that would need to be looked at expeditiously.
[00:30:21] Speaker A: Yes, I think that, you know, with most new legislation, and this is an example of British Columbia having some of the highest standards for protection of gig workers in North America.
There's always fine tuning that's needed afterwards, and sometimes there's enforcement that is needed in relation to these big companies that often feel that they're unaccountable to British Columbia because they're located in the United States somewhere or in a server in the Cayman Islands or whatever it is. So we're going to ensure that these workers are protected. And the best way to do that is to work with gig workers and make sure that we're hearing their voices so that what we put in place works for them. This, this law is no exception to the Other pieces of legislation that we put in place. We'll make sure it works for the workers. That was the whole point of it. And that's what we're going to do.
[00:31:04] Speaker B: So Premier, quickly, once the election results are certified, so are we going to have a sitting of the legislative assembly? Maybe one or two days? Because I don't think a session is something that there is time for or there is any time left in the fall calendar.
[00:31:21] Speaker A: Yeah Vijay, I wouldn't. Currently what we're working towards is sitting in the fall where we would elect a speaker and ensure that the legislative assembly is organized and ready to go so we can start delivering for British Columbians. We got to do that. We got to swear in a speaker and and I wouldn't expect that we would have any legislation and any new laws proposed in the fall session. It would be to get everything organized and ready to go for the next four years. You know, we're setting up the legislature to be a stable governing body for British Columbians to deliver for them on their key priorities around affordability and housing, health care, all these other pieces. And I really look forward to working on that over the next four years. And I'm very honored that British Plumbing has given us the opportunity to be able to address those issues.
[00:32:07] Speaker B: Premier, thank you for your time this morning and we'll chat again, okay?
[00:32:10] Speaker A: You bet, Vijay, thanks for having me.
